Trail Signs

You can't get any where with out some kind of directions. When I was a young girl, I was in a great Girl Scout troop. We did a lot of great things for the community but my favorite thing to do was go camping. While there, we would walk through the woods and look for some kind of trail signs. Sometimes we would just see trail signs made from nature, rain, and rocks falling in just the right way. Other times, the trail signs would be made on purpose.

There are different items that you can use when you want to make your own trail signs. Stones or sticks are great to use to send a message or use as trail signs and won't blow away. Other things you could use to make your own trail signs are pieces of yarn or material. You can tie the yarn are material to trees, branches, bunches of grass or even to rocks. Make sure you place each of the trail signs within sight of the next one when you use this method. Just so you don't leave any litter in the woods, the last person following the trail signs can collect them. You can also use notes when you are making trail signs. A note might say, "Follow the brook until you come to the fallen tree. Where the tree trunk is broken, check for your next trail signs."

Some trail signs you can create are set up with sticks and rocks like this:

"Camp this way"  "Go 10 steps this way"  "Danger"  "End of the trail"  "Keep going"  "Turn around"
"Go the other way"  "Go the other way"  "Split up"  "Go this way"  "Wait"  "Wait"

It's fun to set up trail signs and have your friends follow them to the end. When walking through the woods though, make sure you are with someone and always let someone know where you will be. You should always take a whistle with you and a compass. You can also use a compass to find your way. Check out "How to Use a Compass" and create your own game of trail signs.
