Camping Trips

What kind of camping trips you take depends on what kind of camping you like, which makes sense when you think about it.

I have gone on camping trips at all different times of the year.  I remember one camping trip that took place on the Penobscot River in Maine.  We really roughed it, meaning no bathrooms, no running water; you know all the comforts of home were nowhere to be found.  We arrived at our site by canoe.  It was Columbus Weekend and it was cold.  I put this hat on my head and never took it off until I got home.  I cannot even begin to tell you about the “hat head” I had.  Gross.

Girl Scout camping at Cedar Hill, Massachusetts.    Other camping trips I have experienced have been in the winter in a cabin in the woods.  We did have running water in the cabin since there was a small kitchen in there, but the bathrooms were latrines in the woods.  We kept warm by getting all the wood we could find that wasn’t covered with snow.  The cabin was toasty warm when we crawled into our sleeping bags at night, but I’ll tell ya, it was not so warm in the morning when we got up.  The first ones up on those camping trips started the fire so the rest of us wouldn’t be freezing when we got up.  Some mornings, I could see my breath when I woke up.

Summer camping can be much warmer.  One camping trip I went on, we forgot our sleeping bags.  I know, I know, how could we do that?!  Well, when you are rushing around trying to accomplish what seems like a million things at once, there is always something that doesn’t get done.  In this instance, it was the sleeping bags that didn’t get thrown into the back of the truck.  We headed out to Maine near Acadia National Park.  We got to our site and set up the tent.  We had a few blankets so that night we tried to just sleep wrapped up in these. We were freezing.  Even in the summer, the temperature dropped quite a bit at night.  We ended up sleeping in the back of the truck.  One of us also forgot our wallet on this camping trip, but that will be a story for another time.

Camping trips can take place during the winter, springAmy working on a craft project., summer or fall.  You can go anywhere in the world to experience a once in a lifetime camping trip.  Maybe you’ll drive to your destination, other times; you may take a plane or even use the river to go from site to site.  You may stay at one place or hike all over the place and stay at different camp sites throughout your camping trip.  You may want to bring your family pet with you, so make sure the campsite you are thinking of going to on each camping trip allows pets.  The more popular campsites also have a lot of activities for children.  Some are planned like craft activities, relay races, “Make Your Own Sundaes”, etc.  and there are some that aren’t planned, like a family hike through the woods, or a nice picnic by the lake.  Wherever you go on your camping trip, it will take some initial planning to finally arrive at your destination.   So keep in mind your interests, your families’ interests, your pet’s interests and your budget.  Working out a plan ahead of time will make your camping trip a very pleasant and memorable one.
