Winter camping. Brrrrrrrr. You might think people are totally nuts when it comes to winter camping. Well, you may be right. I have participated in winter camping a few times in New England and I can tell you that it gets pretty cold. But the scenery is amazing! Being the first to see the area covered in a blanket of sparkling snow takes your breath away. Literally! It can be so cold that it is sometimes hard to breath. But don't think about THAT! Think about how can I keep warm while I am winter camping.
Right now we will talk about what clothes to bring. Lots. Layers are key. Make sure all your outer clothing is water repellant. You will get warm if you over dress and as you chop wood (yes, you will be doing this when you go winter camping) or go hiking through the woods. You will want to take off your top layer (possibly a waterproof shell
) to get comfortable. Your head, hands and feet need special attention. Make sure you wear a wool cap and warm, sturdy boots. Make sure your hands and feet are dry before you get dressed for going outdoors. You could sprinkle some powder on them to dry them if you want to. Do not put on wet gloves or socks. If they get wet, change them as soon as possible. Feel free to wear two pairs of gloves and two pairs of socks. Heck, try two pairs of pants of you have to.

When winter camping, it is essential to stay dry and warm. Don't think about the cold as your breath fogs up the area around you. Think about what an awesome view! But. If you do get too cold, don't be afraid or too wimpy to say, "Hey, I gotta go in, I am freezing!" There will be others in your group that feels the same way. It is better to cut the winter camping hike through the woods short, then to have a health issue, like maybe, frostbite.
Some symptoms of frostbite are: feeling numbness in the areas of your ears, nose, toes or fingers, and exposed parts of your body looking a little grayish-white. If this happens you need to get somewhere warm and "defrost" those parts of your body. If your hands are affected, put them under your arm pits. If it's a part of your face, then put your warm hand on that area. Do what you have to in order to get warm and head back to camp and don't forget to call for emergency help. Winter camping can be a great experience; you just have to be prepared for anything.
